Autism Family Camps

The staff at Lighthouse Landing Camp have worked with people who have special needs in a wide variety of capacities: as teachers, educational assistants, personal support workers, respite host families, therapeutic horseback instructors and Autism therapists.  We try hard to draw on our diverse experiences along with the creativity of our youth leaders to achieve our overall goals at camp.  Our goals are to:
1. Provide children with Autism Spectrum Disorder unique experiences in a natural setting that contribute to their overall well-being;

2. Provide integrated activities where all of the children learn from, inspire, and support each other;

3. Provide respite and support to parents and caregivers so they can recharge to meet their daily demands;

4. Ultimately, provide a place where everyone’s light shines

A typical day during the Autism Weeks:

9:30am - 11:30am : Morning Respite

1:00pm - 3:00pm: Afternoon Respite

A Counsellor's Reflection

Message from Claire Tack – A Youth Leader

August 2016

Dear Fran, Jim, Alyssa & Asher,

I wanted to take the time to thank you for all that you have given me and done for me.  Welcoming me into the camp family, advice and support in life and so much more.  You have made a big impact on my life and shaped me to be who I am more than you think.  As you say, the only thing that has changed when you return home is you.  I found this to be true more than any other year.  Four years ago, I had no idea the skills, friendships, and memories that could have grown out of this very special place.  Everyone has a story about summer, but mine could be a novel.  “The purpose of life after all, is to live it, to taste experiences to the outmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experiences.”

This opportunity has done just that.  It has given me so much to think about in life, to get rid of in life, to dream and plan for in life, and to act on in life.  Thank you for teaching me the significance of simplicity: to identify the essentials and eliminate the rest.  I look forward to more experiences with all of you in the years to come and returning to my favourite place with some the best people out there.

Enjoy your last few days of summer and give an extra special hug and kiss to Asher for me.  I can’t wait to see you all soon!

I miss…

Campfires with the best company, turmeric soup, yoga sessions, loose leaf tea, lake baths, deluxe oatmeal, playing with lawn mowers (with Asher), health and nutrition talks, sailing, tomato sandwiches with Vegenaise, Asher’s hugs and kisses, hikes in the rain, cabin cleaning, raspberry picking, phoneless days, stand up canoeing, good laughs, the de-stress river, sunsets, walking into an outhouse when the incense is lit, stargazing, laying on the dock, bare feet, jumping off the raft, sandy bathing suits, wet towels, sitting in hammock, “How Not to Die” in every other sentence (book reference), getting covered in grass on the slip and slide, Muskoka chairs, doing dishes, mice visits, Magnetawan, cabin 8, cabin 7, well really every other cabin, tie dye, meeting new people, sun tanning, geocaching, cold nights, mosquito bites, feeding ducks, planning for the future, canoes full of kids, the floater mat, potluck brunches, life jackets and paddles, all natural peanut butter, chai tea, storytelling, singing songs, evening quick dash swims, nearly impossible organizing tasks, French braids, Sundridge beach, swinging in the park and every other thing that was part of the 6 weeks at Lighthouse Landing.
